The overall goal of Dakshata program is to improve the quality of maternal and newborn care during the intrapartum and immediate postpartum period, through providers who are competent and confident1

The major objectives of the initiative are:

1. To strengthen the competency of providers of the labour room, including medical officers, staff nurses, and auxiliary nurse midwives to perform evidence-based practices as per the established labour room protocols and standards

2. To implement enabling strategies to ensure transfer of learning towards improved adherence to evidence-based clinical practices

3. To improve the availability of essential supplies and commodities in the labour room and the postpartum wards
