Relative quantification of mtDNA content in cellular fraction: Total DNA from cellular fraction of blood from non-pregnant (NP) and from pregnant women of different trimesters (1st, 2nd and 3rd) was used for quantitative PCR. Amplification of mtDNA gene (ND1) was normalized to 18sRNA nuclear gene amplification, using 2-ΔCt method, and presented as relative to NP as control. Significance (P value as indicated) from NP and within different trimester was calculated by Kruskal–Wallis H-test and post-hoc analysis by Bonferroni Correction. ns: non-significant
