  1. Multivariate analysis was undertaken to assess the impact of ethnicity on placental inflammation after adjusting for perinatal factors. These factors included maternal age, gestational age, smoking, prolonged ruptured membranes, location (rural/remote versus metropolitan), genitourinary infection and anaemia. There were five categories for gestation in completed weeks; 20 – 36 weeks, 37 weeks, 38 weeks, 39 weeks and 40 and above weeks. Age was used as a continuous variable within the model. The final model was developed using stepwise logistic regression.
